Far from Random Aesthetic Loveliness: In Praise of Ida Lupino + Fritz Lang's While the City Sleeps

When searching for an image to post alongside a Facebook note on TCM's 24-hour Ida Lupino marathon all day tomorrow, I came across this rather resplendent Italian poster for one of my favorite Hollywood b+w films—Fritz Lang's ultra-bitter, cynical as all hell...+ hilarious and brilliant While the City Sleeps. I have many reasons for loving this black-hearted epic—not the least of which is that it's roughly based on the story of "Lipstick Killer" William Heirens, via Lucy Freeman's classic true crime account Before I Kill More... (one of my favorite crime books, bar none)...+ that the teddy boy killer is played by one of my perennial cinematic loves/one of the most beautiful men in history in his youth: John Barrymore Jr. JB had already started losing his boyish loveliness by this time (to find him at his most sublime you have to go further back to Joseph Losey's 1951 The Big Night). But back to this particular epic, it also includes Ida at her loveliest + bitchiest as a proud/admitted opportunistic slut + gossip-monger, with the ever-brilliant George Sanders as her equally opportunistic fishwife cohort, + young Vincent Price in cute-dolt mode (Price was so much more in non-horror mode than he ever was as the ridiculous caricature that he turned into... age-old story). Never mind that Dana Andrews + Sally Forrest are both as hideous/tedious + painful to watch as ever—there's more than enough to make them forgettable here! One of Lang's best Hollywood bitter diatribes, and, with The Blue Gardenia, probably Lang's best for my money (yes, I do love the Hollywood films more than the German ones)...

Also on TCM's line-up + every bit as bitchy + even much more grim, is Robert Aldritch's The Big Knife—another absolute masterwork that I don't have time to even begin to do justice to at the moment, suffice it to that Ida stars as the wife of a young—+ honestly pretty fucking lovely—Jack Palance as a Hollywood star/part-time boxer, with Shelley Winters along for the ride (no pun intended—as her starlet (yes, she was almost thin at the time) gets drunk + run over by a bus!!!), + at the film's ultra-bleak end Ida gives forth with one of the most blood-curdling screams in the history of film. All this + a bile, piss + vinegar-drenched screenplay by Clifford Odets that puts the film version of Sweet Smell of Success to shame (Ernest Lehmann's novella is another story). Just seek it out!

And the goddess Ida's role as one of Hollywood's earliest female directors isn't slighted either, with her Bigamist also included. While this one might be a little too gritty/faux-verite/drab for my taste in some respects, there are other things I love about it, most notably the combination of Ida + Joan Fontaine...

The marathon runs all day tomorrow, August 27, on TCM, but all of these films are findable in some form of another, + testament to a great + beautiful woman... Now if only they had the cojones to include The Trouble with Angels!!! Dig! xo, B.

Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day: Cocktail Brilliance via Food2

Two beautiful new cocktail jewels via Food2...

Summer Soltice Sake Sparkler
Prep Time: 5 mins
Difficulty: Easy
Yield: 1 drink

Ingredients
1 fresh basil leaf, chopped
6 fresh mint leaves
2 lemon twists
2 orange wedges
1/4 English cucumber, seeded and diced, very cold
1 1/2 ounces orange flavored liqueur (recommended: Cointreau)
Ice cubes
250 ml bottle sparkling sake
Directions
Put the basil, mint, lemon, orange, cucumber, and orange liqueur in a cocktail shaker. Add the ice, cover, and shake vigorously, or stir, until combined and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready when the shaker mists up.) Pour into a chilled Collins glass and top with the sparkling sake. Drop in a pair of chopsticks to pick out the cucumber and oranges, if desired. Drink.

Easy Mellow Melon Margarita
Prep Time: 5 mins
Difficulty: Easy
Yield: serves 1 - 2

Ingredients
1-1/2 oz. Patron Silver tequila
1 oz. fresh lime juice, freshly squeezed
1 oz. orange juice
1 Tbs. agave nectar
5 watermelon cubes
1 small watermelon wedge
Directions
Here's a cocktail my good friend Tom Drelles discovered on one of his many spiritual journeys.

Muddle the watermelon cubes in the bottom of a shaker glass. Add ice, Patron, lime juice, orange juice and agave syrup. Give it a good shake for approximately 10 seconds. Strain and pour into large rocks glass. Garnish with a watermelon wedge.

*

There's also a Peach Cobbler cocktail on the same page that could also be a lustrous prospect. Elsewhere I was intrigued this morning by a RareDaily Miami mention of RA Sushi's "Wonderland Mojito"—white rum, blueberry purée, triple sec, 7up (they say "lemon-lime soda," but there's ONLY one!!!), + fresh blueberries. Dig! xo, B.

Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day Pt. 2: The Ever-Brilliant Fussible in Stockholm

Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day: House Industries

I'll freely admit that as much as I still love House Industries, the time when their name commanded my instant respect and awe are gone, partly for financial reasons (I don't see how anyone can still pay hundreds of dollars for fonts (I don't think any freelancer without a company expense account can), especially when the quality of available free ones has skyrocketed leagues + miles further into the stratosphere than I EVER thought it could—I've gotten hundreds of brilliant + beautiful fonts in the last year without paying a dime—and all legally), partly for others, but I'll always inherently love what they do + have boundless respect for their genius mod-Eames/Neutra aesthetic! Case in point—these resplendently lovely case study pics from the current House Industries home page. Dig! xo, B.

Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day: Rare Daily +

Today's random loveliness is of a less specific source... in fact I don't even remember where this cocktails photo came from, but it is radiant nonetheless... The bottom photo is of the mod lovely Hotel Erwin in Venice, and came to me via the consistently eye-candy-providing Rare Daily e-newsletter. Enjoy! xo, B.

Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day: Lisa Adams

Today's bit of loveliness comes from a new Facebook friend referred by several other FB friends — the mightily brilliant artist Lisa Adams. Dig this in all it's ineffably radiant loveliness! xo, B.

New Loves: Giles Coren

I've discovered countless new loves in the past months (since I've been posting regularly) but the newest that I'm swooning over is what might seem to be an unlikely one — + one sure to invoke the scorn of all my Brit friends: Giles Coren: UK food critic + regular fixture on hideous Gordon Ramsay's The F-Word (CAN'T help loving that as a food show title!). With lustrously beautiful eyes + an equally lovely wit — whether milking a horse ("Ugh, it feels like warm scrotum!") or grilling an upscale grocery store dietician about detox products — I've found Giles to be a honey indeed... But that's just me. xo, B.

New Feature: Random Aesthetic Loveliness of the Day

Hello again all,

Being as how I've been so neglectful for so long... and more significantly find aesthetic eye-candy (+ not just of the beautiful boy sort, though I'll start catching up on that again soon as well) on Facebook + elsewhere virtually everyday, I thought loading the blog up with random loveliness when I find it seemed in order. Today, a lovely Charley Harper-esque illustration by Ernst Haeckel, and an ingenious photo of 4Hero + crew recreating the Abbey Road stance. Dig. xo

Left Austin Behind to Come Back to Southern Cali... But Not Before Finding Dignan

Yes, I'm back in Long Beach — and have nothing nice to say about my unfortunate time in Austin apart from time spent @ the beautiful lake, and having found a new pick for the best band in the world — the mighty + utterly, resplendently + ineffably sublime Dignan, from McAllen TX. It's late + I'm not for rhapsodizing enough to do them justice right now, but take my word for it — they're not a band, they're A RELIGION!!! Or don't take my word for it... just watch and LISTEN for yourself...

As for the rest of my happenings, part of the reason I've been so sadly neglecting this blog is that I'm spending all my time on + posting to Facebook. Feel free to hit me up @ facebook.com/eleganthoodlum, but I do intend to catch up here on the Liq Blog as well, about Austin (the parts I haven't blocked out), being back in Long Beach + much more when I get time... Thanks for bearing with me! xxoo, B.

More Aesthetic Jewels via Eri Nobuchika Redux!

Swing Out Loveliness – Sonic Sublimity from the Loveliest + Mightiest in the World

Still trying to figure out how to get back to L.A. or to San Francisco in time for the early June shows, but I must!!!! A move to either city (back to L.A. or to SF for the first time) is in the works, but it surely won't be in two weeks, so it'll have to be a quick jaunt! In the meantime for all else, check the loveliness!!! xo, B.

Sunday Loveliness of the Perennial/Eternal Sort

One thing I love about Facebook – was reminded of this mighty classic by the goddess Liane Carroll (who I'm jealous got to see the lovely Madeline Bell last week)! Yes, I've been posting all my best on there + neglecting here, but I'll be dividing my time better shortly... The long + short is that I hate Austin, but a move is in the works, even if it's back to sad old L.A. Thank god it's gay church day ($1 mimosas + $1 drafts)... xo, B.

It's Better to Travel Redux – M-Flo + Dragon Ash loveliness...

I know it's been far too long since I last posted on here but that's the curse of Facebook – it's distracting + addictive + fuck it... rather enjoyable! All the better to keep distracting me from a certain godly sublime and lanky but sadly unavailable Austin bartender... But I digress as is often my wont! I'll have more to catch up on here shortly, about the few things I love about Austin + the slightly more than a few that I don't (ideally before my birthday next week) along with much eye-candy per my many obscure new actor loves. In the meantime...
Leave it to M-Flo to provide a radiantly lovely vicarious trip – and an unexpectedly more earnest + fuck-all lush + magnificent one at that! As I said elsewhere, put this between Eri Nobuchika's "Lights" + Mondo Grosso + BoA's classic + almighty "Everything Needs Love" + you've got a flawless excursion most definitely ahead... xo, B.

Kinky Loveliness Redux Part 8 – Hasta Quermanos

Hello all,

While I'm sad and bitter today (even more so than usual (xo)) that the beautiful ones have gigs throughout Texas this week (McAllen and Laredo were postponed, but Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are still getting the boys in all their sublimity) but NOT playing in Austin (ugh!!!)... I was hoping it was because they'd be doing SXSW but alas, it's not to be. If any of my Austin people care to offer a ride to San Antonio for their Club Rio gig on Saturday I'd be ETERNALLY grateful. Meanwhile, stay tuned for my breakdown of the best of the SXSW schedule (Monareta! Zoe! Primal Scream! (The goddess) Alice Russell!) as I brace for my first one and ponder how I'll make it through without getting plastered (Xanax anyone?), and take solace/enjoy the godly ones last week (I assume – miraculously for once I wasn't alerted to it by 18,000 different sources) on Jimmy Kimmel. I was under Gil getting drenched in (his) magnificent sweat at the front of the crowd for their last Kimmel appearance (wait a moment while I calm the vapors and the necessary swooning (xxooxx)), but unfortunately I couldn't be there for this one (one of the only things I'll ever miss about hell-A – not being in the same city as Kinky and Volumen Cero (a.k.a. the illimitably resplendent Lucho and his boys)). I'm also tossing in a lustrous Kinky photo I hadn't yet seen for good measure. As always, dig!

Best and xo, B.

More Aesthetic Jewels via Eri Nobuchika!

I first found Eri Nobuchika while hunting for Shinichi Osawa/Mondo Grosso spots, and found the utterly absolutely fucking resplendent "Yumenokakera". Now after my boy Remi sent me the most definitely lustrous trailer for the new Nintendo Muramasa: The Demon Blade (see below), I got inspired to go back and hunt for more, only to find the two above-cited spots for Eri's sublime in all aspects "Lights." Dig!

Yes We Did... But We Still Need to Hear the Original Mantra on This Beautiful Day

Once again the atmosphere feels lustrous and lovely as this (formerly? I doubt it, but...) half-ass country steps up for our man's swearing in, and of course the original (and now seemingly rather prescient) Pointer Sisters' shout-out NEEDS TO BE HEARD FROM THE ROOFTOPS – and what better conveyance than this MIGHTY MIGHTY 1974 breakdown?!?!? Hope Collective just has the same beautiful spirit and, though I've posted it before way way back, it's always sublime to hear it again...

(And I just dig this opulent Bluefly graphic, as far as red, white and blue go, so as always I had to add some further aesthetic lustrousness...)

My plan for the day (severely tempered by the fact that as usual I am a broke-ass boy!)? A hike up to Zilker Park, a glass of Vinho Verde (my new favorite white wine... and it's Portuguese (also lovely)) at Halcyon, than settling in when OCH (Oil Can Harry's, my Austin fag bar home) opens at 11AM CT for the swearing in and Barack's speech... Should be radiant...

Whatever your plans, have a lovely one and enjoy... xo, B.

Christmas Love from the Mighty Monday Michiru + My New Home in Austin

Hello all,

Getting settled in my beautiful new apartment in the lovely city of Austin, TX, and have much to report on my new digs (my new fag bar homes, Thai, Vietnamese and sushi spots, the sublime lakes, the boy eye candy, and more), but for now I just wanted to post quick holiday wishes – none of which could be better articulated by this gorgeous new PV for Monday Michiru's "Sands of Time" – pure sunshine and our girl looking somehow very Mary Tyler Moore. Happy Hanukkah, merry xmas (I suggest listening to the awayTeam remix of Lou Rawls' take on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"... or of course the perennial Rotary Connection xmas disc (Peace)), happy kwanzaa, and all those other things based on the maker of your choice.

Best and xo,

B.

P.S. If anybody needs last-minute gift ideas – or wants to send anything my way (xox) – here are my top picks:

A Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful Day!!!!

Hello all,

This is and was the most important night in the history of our backward nation and the kids came out and did it – all I can say is fucking hallelujah and thanks to all and of course Barack and Michelle and everybody who made this happen!!!!!!! This is honestly the first time in my entire life that I've been remotely proud to be Americano (or at least not as ashamed of it) and it is a beautiful thing – and yes I did cry!!! Move on up people – it's time for the Repubs to be gone, and for this fine man to rebuild what's left of the USA, with the hope that I can actually make enough money to move to Valparaiso or Veracruz or Montevideo or Lisbon (or of course Hanoi)! Thanks and love to everyone today – it is a BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!!

Best and xxoo,

B.

The Mighty Lady Bunny on What This Backward Country Needs NOW

I try to avoid posting anything politico on here, because I want it to be a sanctuary for only aesthetically (take Bunny (+ Vanessa Williams) above) and ideologically beautiful things, but right now this is too urgent, so here it is...

Leave it to the theatrical genius of our time (the mighty Lady Bunny) to lead the so so so so so urgently essential charge against the Satanic Republican ticket and all their catastrophic, inevitable and inoperable damage to the environment (last chance to do anything to stop global warming – and you know damned well that McCain/Palin sure as fuck won't do ANYTHING to promote renewable energy or force any corporations to go green because THEY'RE OWNED BY THE OIL COMPANIES), the economy (I don't know about you but I haven't had any steady work IN A YEAR and hundreds of thousands of others are in the same sinking lot), immigration (laws THAT NEED TO BE CORRECTED NOW), real public transit and rail systems for those of us who don't want to keep making global warming worse with gas-guzzling and polluting cars, trucks, and SUVs that are the CAUSE OF THE NEED FOR OIL IN THE FIRST PLACE, health care (YES, WE NEED SOCIALIZED MEDICINE), GLBT equality (same sex marriage laws or not, they can still fuck us over big time), and yes, abortion rights (the last thing this world needs right now is more backward Republicans (and sure as hell Palins), or obviously children forced to be born from rape and/or incest – and frankly I don't know how any breeders OR gays and lesbians can be so selfish, irresponsible, and just plain MORONIC to bring any new children into the world right now at all when nobody has any idea if the world's going to implode in OUR lifetime, let alone THEIRS), and I could go on and on and on. As everyone knows I just want to get the hell out of this backward country, and have since I was 5, but I CAN'T BECAUSE I CAN'T GET ANY WORK, LARGELY BECAUSE I CAN'T AND WON'T DRIVE. And even if I did get to Spain, or Veracruz, or Kyoto, or Montevideo, they'll take the rest of the world with 'em. Now I'll get off my soapbox and lead it to the girl who should be running things...

From Lady Bunny...

A HEARTY THANKS TO THE LADIES OF THE VIEW! FOR GRILLING MCCAIN HARDER THAN ANY OF THE ANCHORS' MAJOR NETWORKS NEWS CHANNELS

I'm so glad that Joy Behar called him on his LIES, using the word LIES. Politicians and news anchors always say that so and so was "misleading", or "stretching the truth" – they can't quite seem to come out, as Joy did, and say LIES, which they are! If McCain can't stand up to a coffee klatch, how on earth is the turd running with national defense as his strong suit? The fact is, there is no explanation for his lies except that he's a scuzz running a nasty campaign which counts on American's being so stupid that his misleading ads will work. And he promised early on in his campaign that he was too honorable to use any negative ads.

Barbara and Joy were in a delicious attack mode, as if this man was so plainly wrong that he didn't even deserve much respect, earning mine in the process. Whoopi just hung back with an attitude of "Honey, I already know this thing is the devil" and thankfully Sherri Shepherd, who thinks the earth is flat, kept her stupid mouth shut. A very fun watch. Sure wish our newscasters could be as hard-hitting as these gals! Enjoy!

LIPSTICK ON A NIGHTMARE

Wow! Here I've been searching high and low for ways to discredit Sarah Palin, the Republican's new golden girl. And there are plenty of them to unearth. But Arianna Huffington is dead right – a creepy Alaskan religious nut/hunting freak with a pregnant unwed daughter isn't the issue we should be focusing on. The fundamentalists are going to back Palin no matter what because she's so anti-abortion that she doesn't even approve of abortions for rape and incest victims. As Randi Rhodes put it, if you were raped in Wasilla, Alaska at the time of Sarah's tenure as mayor, you'd call in to report a rape and would probably be asked for your name, location, description of attack number and your CREDIT CARD NUMBER, so that you could pay for your own rape kit, which gathers and analyzes the forensic evidence needed to convict your attacker.

In terms of colorful loonies, McCain/McSame/McBush made a masterful choice. Not perturbed by her abortion stance? The bitch advocates shooting wolves from helicopters. Speaking in her own Pentecostal church, she called the war a plan from God. But wait, isn't God's son the Prince of Peace? And whatever happened to Peace on Earth , Goodwill towards men and commandment #6 THOU SHALT NOT KILL? To claim that the baseless war in Iraq is God's plan is putting lip-stick on jihad, the muslim term for religious war.

Admittedly, in the back of our minds, there is a scary thought that since McCain would be the oldest president ever if elected, another of those skin cancer lesions might pop up and kill him, leaving us with scary-ass Moose Thing from Alaska, whose recent interviews shows she knows nothing about foreign policy. The fool is even talking about starting a war with Russia!?! With what military?

But Palin has undeniably unified the Republican base in a way that McCain never could. The man was everyone's last choice as presidential nominee. Giuliani was the early fav, but thankfully that psycho burnt out quickly. Then the focus shifted to Huckabee, the preacher with a bible in one hand and a gun in the other. He quickly petered out, too. That left Mitt Romney, the plastic Mormon Reagan wannabe who spent like $200 per vote in one state that he lost before bowing out, and Fred Thompson, who just wasn't "presidential" enough and considered too lazy to get anything done by his own party. So McCain got the nomination by default. He was everyone's last choice as nominee. Old, cantankerous and prone to gaffes, he seemed a clear loser against his democratic rival, a younger, dynamic speaker who was rousing the nation (or at least the unprejudiced half of the nation) with his calls for change. Funny how McCain noticed how well Obama's change message was working--and stole it! McCain has to make every attempt to distance himself from George W. Bush, the least popular president in history, who shares McCain's party affiliation. Bush isn't even to be seen campaigning with McCain, and although McCain voted in line with Bush 90% of the time, he has the nerve to call himself a maverick!

Another debunking of McCain occurred during the RNC. McCain admitted that his captors in Vietnam broke him. He was captured, tortured, held for years and he finally gave in, providing his captors with military information and appearing in 30 propaganda videos! Honey, I'd do the same if I were tortured, But a war hero would have held out against the enemy! So McCain was a prisoner of war, which is no pleasant holiday, but he is no war hero. And if you really wanna go there, McCain's family connections got him promoted to pilot more quickly than his skills would recommend, which could be why he was shot down in the first place--he wasn't the best pilot! Even if he was, several torturous years in captivity doesn't mean that he has a clue what to do in a different war, decades later, when he's practically senile. And this bastard has even consistently voted against veterans rights! If you want to look for a foreign policy leader, look at how Bush has been quietly implementing the changes which OBAMA has recommended: drawing down troops in Iraq and sending more to combat the worsening situation in Afghanistan. Barack has also advocated diplomacy before war with even rogue nations and now Bush is talking with the one of the original points on the axis of evil, North Korea! Bush is implementing Obama's policy suggestions.

But for some reason, Americans have the uncanny ability to mindlessly bleat "SUPPORT THE TROOPS", even as their interest in the war diminishes. We're tired of it. Idiots, you're paying for it! News from Iraq has faded further and further from the headlines and from the top stories on TV. Why? Because many Americans only get involved in politics when gas prices go up and they can't afford to drive to their next door neighbor's house--because their cup-holder and cigarettes are in there--in a gas-guzzling SUV as cheaply as they used to.

To me, if the economy is your main issue as a christian nation, perhaps you should consider that your righteous christian butts are all accomplices to mass murder, paying millions everyday to occupy Iraq with Iraqi deaths estimated between 655,000 and one million. Little memory refresher: these are deaths of citizens of a country which never attacked us. But even if you are a card-carrying atheist, it's easy to understand that if we are spending hundreds of millions per day at war, then that's not going to help out our record deficit.

Well now, there was a little good news on the recession front. That tax rebate! Woo hoo! That diddly-squat wouldn't even pay two months of my insurance bill!  (One article found that Americans spent most of their rebates on porn!) Don't trust anyone who is giving away money--that's a guaranteed smokescreen. How about getting the hell out of Iraq and distributing some of those trillions we've wasted to broken Americans being forced from their homes due to the mortgage fiasco? Instead, McCain is committed to "staying the course", even if it takes 100 years. With the war costing a fortune and a presidential candidate committed to extending it indefinitely, we're in great shape economically. AND MCCAIN HAS ADMITTED THAT HE KNOWS LITTLE ABOUT THE ECONOMY! Here's his quote from the Boston Globe:"The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should. I've got Greenspan's book". So the old fart admits that he can't resurrect the nation from recession, the country's #1 issue. But I'll vote for him anyway because I don't trust a black man who makes sense?

Usually makes sense. While we're on the subject of taxes, even Obama is promising to cut taxes. People! WE NEED TO PAY MORE TAXES! That's how we get better public healthcare and education! Taxes provide a higher standard of living through better public services, like the ones which assist the elderly obtaining medicines they can't afford. Currently, some old folks are skipping their medicines because they  are so broke that they must now choose between medicine and food. The grand old USA is becoming a 3rd world country! Higher taxes mean better-funded public services. Say $200 bucks is knocked off of your annual tax bill. Are you so short-sighted that you can't see that this isn't covering one month's astronomical insurance payment?

I'm worried that as charismatic as he is, Obama is too much a gentleman to fight back as hard as he's getting it. Or maybe his advisors have cautioned him that "Look, guy. You've gotten 1/2 of the voters to accep a black guy with the middle name Hussein. But they will not accept an angry black man of any name. We're still too racist a country for that."

But how can any message, angry or not, get through to a nation that is so childish and ADD that they boil what may be the most important election of their lifetimes to THIS [NY Post's Lipstick on a Pig/Obama Slams Pig Swill cover].

I'm livid over this manufactured "scandal". Not only does a pig in lipstick have nothing to do with an exit strategy from Iraq, global warming, the mortgage crisis, reforming healthcare, our school system or half a dozen other things in decline like levees and collapsing bridges, The Post didn't even ask me for a release before they used my photo for this cover! The noive! OINK!

And check out the tiny little box in the upper left corner which says 9/11, we'll never forget. No, we won't ever forget the tragedy. We'll just let a pig in cosmetics eclipse your 7th anniversary! I saw that second bulding fall on 9/11 and here's a few things I'll never forget.

9/11 happened on George Bush's watch. He did not keep the people in my city safe. Hell, he didn't keep the Pentagon safe.

Bush's dad was eating breakfast with Osama Bin Laden's father, an old Bush family business partner,  when 9/11 occurred.

All flights for Americans were shut down, but over a dozen Saudi's were allowed to fly home. Saudi Arabia being the country that most of the hijackers hailed from.

Taking advantage of our shock, we allowed ourselves to be lead into a war with Iraq which had no weapons of mass destruction and posed no imminent threat. As a result, the whole word hates us and we are breeding generations upon generations of terrorists who can't wait to attack us.

7 years later, we are in still in that war. But how can it be a war if no one from that country attacked us? It's a military occupation, and it will last until we've drained every drop of oil from Iraq.

We recently got a C as a grade on how safe we are from our biggest threat, a nuclear attack. This grade was from a bi-partisan investigatory committee called Partnership For A Secure America. Remember that the next time you are taking of your shoes and throwing away your hand cream at the airport.

There is ludicrous talk of the surge succeeding. The "surge"? A surge is a quick pulse. We been surgin' now for over a year, and though Bush is reducing troop numbers in Iraq, the troop levels will still be higher than the pre-surge levels.

Our military is wiped out. It's hard to recruit when the tours of duty have increased in length and the times at home have been cut short.

WE'VE ALL PUT LIPSTICK ON ALL OF THE IMPORTANT CAMPAIGN ISSUES--AND WE'RE DISCUSSING THE LIPSTICK AND NOT THE ISSUES WHICH AFFECT OUR DAILY LIVES! And now I'll let Arianna Huffington bring it on home with her fantastic article which puts the whole Palin mess into perspective beautifully. I normally don't paste entire articles, but this is too important and there's not much time, folks. Quit bitching about the government and do something or you have no right to bitch. Contribute $. Forward emails.  Challenge friends and neighbors. Blog it. Announce it in your shows. Hang up a sign or wear a button or t-shirt. In a democracy, the government is WE THE PEOPLE. Christ, have we ever failed ourselves by sitting back and whining. TIME FOR ACTION NOW! Or your ass will really be whining if McCain gets in.

SARAH PALIN: A TROJAN MOOSE CONCEALING FOUR MORE YEARS OF GEORGE BUSH

by Arianna Huffington

Did Sarah Palin wrongfully push to have her ex-brother-in law fired? Was she really against the "Bridge to Nowhere?" Did she really sell Alaska's plane on eBay, or just list it on eBay? Did she actually have any substantial duties commanding the Alaska National Guard?

The correct answer to all these questions is: who cares? Which isn't to say these aren't valid questions, or that Palin and the McCain camp aren't playing it fast, loose, and coy with each of them. The point is that Palin, and the circus she's brought to town, are simply a bountiful collection of small lies deliberately designed to distract the country from one big truth: the havoc that George Bush and the Republican Party have wrought, and that John McCain is committed to continuing.

Every second of this campaign not spent talking about the Republican Party's record, and John McCain's role in that record, is a victory for John McCain.

Her critics like to say that Palin hasn't accomplished anything. I disagree: in the space of ten days she's succeeded in distracting the entire country from the horrific Bush record – and McCain's complicity in it. My friends, that's accomplishment we can believe in.

Just look at the problem John McCain faced. George Bush has a disastrous record, and the country knows it. John McCain – the current one, not the one who vanished eight years ago – has no major disagreements with George Bush (and I'm sorry, wanting to fire Donald Rumsfeld a bit sooner doesn't qualify) and wants to continue his incredibly unpopular policies for another four years. The solution? Enter Sarah Palin, a Trojan Moose carrying four more years of disaster.

And the plan has worked beautifully. Just look at what's being discussed just 57 days before the election. Is it the highest unemployment rate in five years? The bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? The suicide bombing yesterday in Iraq that killed six people and wounded 54 – in the same market where last month a bomb killed 28 people and wounded 72? That the political reconciliation that was supposedly the point of "the surge" is nowhere near happening? That Iraq's Shiite government is now rounding up the American-backed Sunni leaders of the Awakening? That the reason 8,000 soldiers may be leaving Iraq soon is so more can be deployed to Afghanistan where the Taliban is steadily retaking the country?

No. We're talking about whether Sarah Palin was or was not a good mayor, whether she was or was not a good mother, whether her skirts are too short and her zingers too sarcastic.

Contrary to what we're hearing 24/7 in the media, the next few weeks are not a test of Sarah Palin. The next few weeks are a test of Barack Obama.

He needs to dramatically redirect this election back to a discussion over the issues that really matter – the issues that will impact the future of this country. A presidential campaign is a battle and this is the time for Obama to show some commander-in-chief skills. I'm not talking about calling Palin out for lying about his record and demeaning community organizing. I'm talking about grabbing the political debate by the throat. The country is already angry about what's happened over the last seven-plus years – he shouldn't be afraid to give voice to that anger. Obama has spent years adopting a non-threatening persona; but he can't let his fear that appearing like an "angry Black man" (a stereotype not-too-subtly fueled by Fox News) will turn off swing voters keep him from channeling the disgust and outrage felt by so many voters –swing and otherwise.

McCain's team, in an effort to distract, is going to keep doing what they're doing – diverting voters and the media with a tantalizing combination of personal trivia and small lies. It doesn't matter if they're caught in them – in fact, all the better. Because they know there is no way in hell they can win if this election is about the big truth of the Bush years.

McCain's real running mate is George Bush and the failed policies of the Republican Party. Even if they are dressed up in a skirt, lipstick, and Tina Fey glasses.

Pure Aesthetic Sublimity Inna Jordi Labanda Mindset via Shinichi Osawa

While searching for more Shinichi Osawa loveliness I came across this retina-searingly resplendent and utterly and miraculously lustrous spot for an Osawa-produced Eri Nobuchika cut (with a chorus by none other than the goddess Monday Michiru). This Technicolor explosion comes via designer Daisuke Nakayama, and while its aesthetic loveliness reminds me just a bit of Jordi Labanda, the work here is even much, MUCH MORE EPICALLY SUBLIME!!!! Dig... xo, B.

At Long Last – A Real Soundtrack for Summer 08

Amidst all the strife of the moment, here comes pure sonic summer bliss via Solange – who I give insane props for working with Mark Ronson and Boards of Canada (!!!!) when she could just as easily have gone the predictable Timbaland route (not that I don't love Timbaland, and admittedly she did also go the Neptunes route). Plus this song is insanely addictive enough that I won't even bring up Bring It On: All or Nothing (though I do miss the lovely sight of Gus Carr (see below)... and all of Solange's recent interviews have portrayed her as a bit insane)... xo, B.

Why Did I Never Realize...

Hello all,

Sorry for the long pause between posts, but things are not good for me right now. Trying to escape the hell that is Los Angeles (the filthiest, most horrendously unfriendly city in the known world, especially without a car), but at least I am listening to absolute beauty at the moment, thanks to an album I should have discovered long, long ago. Lord knows I HATE "It's My Life" enough in the original, and that scaggy-ass Gwen covered it later made it even worse, but even at misguided 16 I knew that Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden was a sublime masterwork of epic proportions, only rivaled at the time by SPK's Zamia Lehammani, which will remain for all time the most beautiful album ever ever crafted. Somehow I neglected to discover Talk Talk's 1991 follow-up Laughing Stock, and I am gladly soaking in the riches of my mistakes by catching up now. It seems especially fitting after watching my man Tony Bourdain soaking in the loveliness of Laos on the No Reservations premiere earlier, while waiting for the much-anticipated (by me at least) Colombia installment, shot in Medellin, wherein I try to forget the boy who almost (and I wish he had) destroyed me. But the Talk Talk is godly, and I'm loving it more than anything. Now if somebody can give me a reason to wake up in the morning other than listening to this album again, other than seeing my Morales Astra Heights boys at the Echo tomorrow now (with Von Iva), even without my beautiful Timmy (the baby of the group, who's moved back to Texas, destined to be my new home (Austin, anyone?)), I'll give you a medal, or buy you a beer if by the odd chance I have any money left. For now, more Mark Hollis... Afterthought: how much did they get from Hula, and Dif Juz, and This Heat, and how much did they inspire my other love J. Swinscoe (other most beautiful man alive), and the other best band in L.A., Signal Hill? xxoo, B.

Carol Channing via Lady Bunny

No question that I've been a MISERABLE GIT for the past few weeks, but thanks to the mighty Lady Bunny this gave me much levity via the perennially brilliant if mildly psychotic Carol Channing. It ain't Thoroughly Modern Millie (where she gets shot out of a cannon, Mary Tyler Moore calls someone a bitch, Bea Lillie chloroforms everybody to send them to a white slavery ring in a Chinese laundry – and Julie Andrews sings in Yiddish), but it's still pretty damn brilliant. xo, B.

The Liquidator's New Residency

Hello all,

Sorry for the lack of posts lately but not much has changed – I'm still in love with the new Swing Out Sister disc, Jazztronik, my Niño Astronauta boys and their new Kobol disc... BUT one other thing that has changed is that I'm starting my new Saturday afternoon residency spinning 4PM-8PM at Silverlake Lounge with my brother Mario behind the bar. Stop by and see me, and if you do today you can wish me a happy birthday (6 days early... it's Friday, May 9) and come with me over to the Echo for the mighty Bostich + Fussible after. Best and xox to all, B.

The Inevitable Swing Out Redux: The Mighty Return!!!!!!

I'm very impatiently waiting to get my hands on my copy of Beautiful Mess (many thanks again to my boy in SF (that'd be Remi) for saving me the Japanese price tag), but in anticipation I had to post the resplendent promo spot for "Something Everyday," along with the lovely display on swingoutsister.com and a note to all that you MUST visit the SOS MySpace to hear the miraculous new version of "Secret Love" (any worries that the original drum machine version might have sparked are now well-doused by the classic Swing Out magnificence of the lavish new model) and the LP title track. More to come once I've been able to soak in all of the beauty of the full-length, but from these first tastes it sounds like a return to sublime form for the mighty Corinne and Andy, and a sweet step up from Where Our Love Grows. And doesn't Andy look beautiful in this 1993 rehearsal clip? Posted by the man himself! xxooxx to the brilliant ones for reducing me to a giddy schoolgirl once again.

Brilliant + Gorgeous Even on a Covent Garden Streetcorner: Roisin Murphy

The ever-lovely and brilliant Roisin sent out a MySpace bulletin in advance of her appearance on a Covent Garden streetcorner for the BBC Culture Show's busking challenge, but I never could have expected that it would sound so shimmeringly lustrous. That she would look impeccable was a given, but this illitimably gorgeous (and far superior to the electro version) acoustic arrangement of "You Know Me Better" (combined with the adorable nature of her rapport with her backup girls) are just too brilliant to go unviewed and unheard. Thanks to my boy Remi and the often-invaluable OMG Blog for the heads-up. This bonus clip of "Sow Into You" live at Paradiso is not as miraculous as the clip I first saw on TV in rural Spain, but it's still pretty damn lovely.

Oh My Fucking God—The Most Exquisite White Boy Alive (Mark Ronson) + The BBC Orchestra!!!!!!!!!

There are many reasons why I haven't written a word on here in more than 6 months, all of them involving my ridiculously complicated love for the most epically beautiful boy alive in Manizales, Colombia, and an ill-fated trip to Buenos Aires that resulted in a horrifically painful broken shoulder and 2 subsequent surgeries (all good now at long last), but I'm back – and can't think of anything MORE INEFFABLY FUCKING MIRACULOUS to rouse me out of my slumber than this new (to me at least) footage of the also godly beautiful Mark R. conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra as if he WERE David Axelrod. Sonic sublimity rivalling Ryota + the always lustrous sight of Mark in all his exquisite loveliness – with the added bonus of the also slightly lovely Charlie Waller from the Rumble Strips (on his miraculous rethink of "Back to Black" that's one more distancing step from Amy, who I now hate with a passion – all of her success should be going to Alice R., who would handle it with actual GRACE), and the more beautiful Alex Greenwald (my Phantom Planet love) in the shimmeringly radiant spot for "Just." Dig. xxoo, B.

New Loves (Part 4): Ryohei Yamamoto (With M-Flo + Beyond)

I first caught sight of the beautiful Ryohei Yamamoto in M-Flo's "Summer Time Love" clip (also further sonic proof that DJ Taku is a brilliant producer), then found the blisteringly brilliant combination of shimmering D+B loveliness and j-pop fluff that is "Miss You" (the spot is loveliness, but the live performance is SUBLIME (and further proof once again that I need to move to Japan). Last on the roster is a static frame with preview tracks from part 1 of his lovely new house covers project (Cavaca) – one track of which is produced by none other than my sonic god of the world Jazztronik. Of course whether or not we'll be able to find it on these sad-ass shores is another matter, but we shall see. Dig.

Tracklist:
1. You Gotta Be (Track: Kentaro Takizawa / Original: Des'ree)
2. Sweet Soul Revue -ENGLISH Version- (Track: MAKAI / Original: PIZZICATO FIVE)
3. Calling You (Track: CLAZZIQUAI PROJECT / Original: Holly Cole)
4. Lately (Track: Jazztronik / Original: Stevie Wonder)
5. Human Nature (Track: LAVA / Original: Michael Jackson)
6. Georgy Porgy (Track: eighteen degrees. / Original: TOTO)
7. She Will Be Loved (Track: cargo / Original: Maroon 5)
8. I Like It (Track: AKAKAGE / Original: DeBarge)

Sex God of the World Fernando Montana Sighting – On Top Chef!!!@!!!

There's no denying that this season's roster on Top Chef are incredibly dull and there's no aesthetic loveliness to be found among any of them. There's no godly Sam T., or even a Harold. The only possibility was the slightly cute in a white trash way (yes, there can be such a thing as hot white trash but it's a rarity you won't find 99.9% of the time) Clay, who was the first to go. (This season of the Next Food Network Star has the same problem, but it's still more watchable – and I'll never get over my love for last season's magnificent Andrew Schumacher.)

But tonight I got an ineffably lovely respite for a brief second when, as the chefs were catering a gourmet BBQ, I caught sight of one of the most exquisitely beautiful Latin porn boys ever – the epically sublime Fernando Montana. (My reaction obviously was to scream "Holy f*ck" at the top of my lungs.) Fernando only did a few rare films for Falcon and one for Hothouse over the span of a few years, but the second I first caught sight of him I fell in mad love (yes, again). And there are only three other men in the history of porn that I've wanted to see get f*cked as much on film (and whom never have) – Manuel Torres, Vin Nolan (who did get gangf*cked in a scene in the documentary Sex/Life in L.A., but as it's not a real porn film you don't get to see anything good), and Aiden Shaw. Evidently Fernando must live in Miami, along with fellow Latin porn god Alec Martinez, who thankfully has gotten f*cked (and even nightsticked once) in many films.

To see him on Top Chef is something lovely and brilliant (though clearly the producers can't get any credit for it) that I never ever ever would've expected. And it's a beautiful thing.

And I have to add that these photos don't begin to articulate how lovely he really is, but they're the best I could find. Seek him out on film to see him in all his real sublimity.

Redeeming My Sonic Credibility: Nortec y Banda Agua Caliente Live + In Rehearsal

New Loves (Part 3): Brandon Buddy + Jason Tam

I was feeling only slightly pervy for falling in mad love with Brandon Buddy and Jason Tom, two godly beautiful boys who play teenagers Cole and Markko (respectively) on my favorite not the least bit f*cking guilty pleasure One Life to Live, a show that I first started watching many years ago for the also perennially exquisite Kamar de Los Reyes (who I'd loved previously on the short-lived but brilliant CBS series Four Corners – with the also godly sublime Justin Chambers, who I had the pleasure of spotting at Sunset + Sanborn recently, but I digress...), and later also for Kamar's onscreen brother David Fumero.

The only redeeming thing about OLTL's ill-conceived musical endeavor of this week was the adorable and mad f*cking lovely spectacle of Brandon and Jason trying to sing. I do love Jason as well (and am saddened by the fact that we didn't get to see him run naked through the halls of his high school, as Markko threatened to do on a dare), but it's Brandon who I'm most in love with. I have no problem perving on teenage boys (usually Latin boys, one reason I loved Wassup Rockers (though I'd previously hated all of Larry Clark's other films)), but as it happens Brandon is actually 23 and Jason graduated from high school in 2001, in his native Hawaii (also explaining his loveliness). Now the only reason for feeling like a card-carrying perv (which I am and mad proud of it, incidentally, a fact of which all who know me are fully aware) is all the things I'm imagining Brandon and Jason doing together, but I'll leave that to your imagination.

As one who's been chased by disgusting old men all my life, I would feel guilty for that reason alone, but I decided long ago that as long as I still look 20 I don't give a f*ck.

One last thing about Brandon, he's now officially on my roster of the four most beautiful white boys on television, second only to Dave Annable, and alongside CSI: Miami's Jonathan Togo, and my other perennial love Milo Ventimiglia.

And, yes, I do know that this post makes me sound like the biggest faggot in history, but, once again, I don't give a f*ck...

One last disclaimer, obviously I know full well that the clip below is the most horrendously misguided spot I'll ever include on this blog and I KNOW how awful it is but if you don't think these two boys are beautiful there's something wrong with you. Enjoy. xo, B.

The Reason I Became a Graphic Designer: Design God Swifty's London Exhibition

For anyone who doesn't know me, the sole reason I sought to become a graphic designer is because of Ian "Swifty" Swift. From the seminal early Talkin' Loud covers through what continues to be my bible – the mighty Straight No Chaser – Swifty has been my god for all things aesthetic design-wise. True, before I discovered Swifty I worshipped Reid Miles, Neville Brody, 23 Envelope, Chris Biggs' Sweatbox covers, Jon Wozencroft's work for the Touch label and so on, but it was Ian's ineffable visual articulation of all things jazz and the Gilles P. aesthetic that sealed my fate.

So it was with much much sadness that I had to miss the London Illustration Gallery's recent Art of Straight No Chaser exhibition, and the previous show strictly devoted to Swfity and his boy Mitchy. Most definitely a F*CK I WISH I WERE RICH ENOUGH TO JUMP ON A F*CKING PLANE TO LONDON moment (the last one being the last Jazztronik Jazz Café gig)...

All that said, I have years to go before I can even begin to aspire to reaching Swifty's aesthetic benchmark, and at some point I'll have to get more real training, but it's his inspiration and his continued work for SNC, Especial, Far Out, and so on that keeps me going. xo, B.

And, yes, that epically sublime boy on the insert is my dream husband P-Rod (Paul Rodriguez Jr.) on the inside cover. For more of his crushingly devastating loveliness, visit his Plan B page, his Nike page (search riders), and the bio on paulrodriguez.com. xo, B.

Still More New (Sonic + Filmic) Loveliness: Brand New Alice R. + Brilliant Monday M. News

I just stumbled on this new bit of jewel-like opulence (I know, I'm feeling back-in-the-day verbose this evening) from the goddess Alice Russell, and while I don't yet know where it's from, I have no problem saying that it's the most radiant dancefloor killer track from her in a long long while.

Also on the goddess front, for anyone who doesn't yet know, the new Monday Michiru cover album – with the title cut being "My Ever Changing Moods" (!!!???!!!) – is set for Japan-only release on Geneon on July 4th. Consult the official Monday site for the occasionally perverse but for the most part characteristically brilliant tracklist. And drench in this other bit of magnificent news culled from the girl's email newsletter:

"NEW JAZZTRONIK COLLABORATION!: You know I'm a fan of Jazztronik; I think Ryota is really talented as both a beat & track maker as well as a musician and composer. So when he asked me if I could sing and write lyrics for a new track, I leaped at the chance – HELL YEAH! We just finished last weekend and it's a fun Latin Jazz House number entitled "Mista Swing." To be released June 27th from Pony Canyon in the album entitled 'Grand Blue.'"

And the gods collide to provide more prescient Technicolor and vivacity once again... (xxooxx)

An Old Sonic Love Who's Turned Out to Be EPICALLY F*CKING EXQUISITE: Mark Ronson (Love + a Litany of Eye-Candy from the Beautiful One)

We all knew well before either Amy album that Mark Ronson was a production genius (as is Salaam Remi), but how I never caught sight of his RIBCAGE-SMASHING EXQUISITE beauty is a true f*cking mystery. Yet the flurry of buzz/hype/what have you surrounding the release of Version has brought tear-inducingly magnificent photo material on him out in tsunami force. And it's a lustrous/effulgent/shimmeringly f*cking beautiful beautiful beautiful thing. Enjoy the above eye-candy–with wistful flashbacks of young Mark Brydon....

In Constant Rotation + Respect to Another Soul-Jazz Empress: London Elektricity + the Mighty Liane Carroll

I've always loved London Elektricity and been despondent that I never got to see the live show while it was still extant, but I did not know about the Live at the Scalia disc/DVD set until I stumbled on it while doing research before Tony Colman's LE US DJ tour in March of '07. Ever since its purchase I cannot seem to stop its constant 24/7 rotation, and have been playing NOTHING else (except for occasional "Love Bug" breaks (see the M-Flo post below)), with this masterwork of live D+B infiltrating my speakers for days on end.

With that in mind, I have also always loved the flawless vocal phrasing of Liane Carroll, and while I have to continue to stew in my jealousy that my girl – and the other true soul-jazz goddess – Tessa Souter got to see Liane at Ronnie Scott's while she herself was in London to kill it at Pizza on the Park, I now at least have the LE live set and this sonically miraculous take on "Dublin Morning" to content myself with. Though it should go without saying, the bit of loveliness that is "Dublin..." has that radiant, sun-kissed Style Council-via-Terry Callier lustre that nothing else can rival, or tarnish. And yes, the other reason for my loving her is clearly her penchant for maintaining a vocal elegance to rival Nancy W. and Cleo L.... even while belting coral-reef-collapsing dancefloor killers with Tony Colman and co., as on this gorgeous take on "My Dreams," with Liane aptly covering for (the great) Robert Owens to say the f*cking LEAST. And as for any other thoughts on Liane you might have while watching these clips, she clearly has a beautiful spirit and my directive is to just close your eyes and soak in that mighty voice.

Much–Needed Color + Light Pt. 2 (The Godly Beautiful Nickodemus + Quantic for Apple)

More on the effulgent color + beautiful boy tip, it's lovely to see the most beautiful DJ in America – Nickodemus (see above) – + the also brilliant + lovely Quantic getting love via the new iTunes clip. I haven't always loved Apple's ad campaigns (including every other iPod commercial to this point), despite my swearing by Mac as a religion, but between their employing "Mi Swing es Tropical" for this commercial and their continual employment of the perenially magnificent and utterly sublime Justin Long – I miss Ed – as the proverbial face of Apple, they're sure as f*ck doing something right. See bonus Justin below... and for blurry but still lovely shirtless Justin visit here.

Much–Needed Color + Light Pt. 1 (The Inevitable Swing Out Redux)

After a sad-ass 35th birthday and a weekend of carnage in San Francisco that was meant to help me find an apartment – a futile plan without a triple-digit income or a recently deceased relative it would seem – I'm pressing on to where to move in Texas, the logical choice being Austin. The chief appeal of Texas is of course that it's closer to Mexico, which I hope means the promise of many beautiful Mex boys. Don't start forwarding my mail yet, we'll see.

In the meantime, I need some radiantly unnatural Technicolor and vivacity to keep me up, as it where, and for that I turn back to my loves Corinne and Andy and my favorite Swing Out Sister clip: the ambigulously tropical spot for "Somewhere in the World." This is, once again, before Corinne got her hand gestures in check even to a point, but she looks lovely and Andy of course looks lovelier.

Also on the tip of lustrous color and flawless art direction, I occupied my birthday week with Bachelor in Paradise, a miraculous feat of Eames/Koenig/Neutra-derived aesthetic sublimity – even with the grotesque handicap of starring Bob Hope as a lethally dangerous lothario let loose in a suburban tract development!?! If ANYONE ON EARTH can overlook the presence of Bob Hope and still call it aesthetically immaculate ANYBODY can. That said, art direction aside, Lana Turner's 90mph Afro-Cuban fire dance in a polynesian nightclub, the presence of the oddly compelling Janis Paige (see also the equally essential 1959 Please Don't Eat the Daisies), the ever-miraculous Reta Shaw in her usual busybody bulldagger role (only diverted from in her staggeringly brilliant nightclub singer turn in 1962's Made in Paris)) – and a script that only the goddess Vera Caspary could pen. Dig these jewels:

"It would be pink."
"That's not pink – it's California coral."
"Who thinks up the names for colors in this country – Tennessee Williams?"

"Isn't it a little early?"
"Early? It's April!"

"A shrimp cocktail and 5 gibsons – not the most balanced diet."
"I shouldn't have had the shrimp cocktail."

"Hey, if your mascara runs you're gonna discolor your vodka!"

Genius.

M-Flo Loves Boa + I Think They're Both F*cking Adorable (In a Completely Non-sexual Way Of Course)

I love that there's such a disconnect in J-pop that disposable (but adorable and engagingly infectious) pop artists like M-Flo and Boa can keep on with their pop grind and still work with the gods Jazztronik and Shinichi Osawa (respectively). That said, I cannot for the life of me get the "Love Bug" out of my head, and don't really have a desire too. For much much much more sublime Boa, click here.

Perennial Loves/Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Man: Andy Caldwell

I've been meaning to post these exquisite photos of Andy Caldwell for some time – and to say that both the title track of Universal Truth and the shimmering bossa of "I Can't Wait" were among the loveliest of '06 by far – and an email invite to his birthday gig next Thursday at the newly renovated Boardners, with a live PA by the newly reunited Soulstice that should likewise be gorgeous, seemed the ideal time. Enjoy these sublime pics, and let me send best birthday wishes to this fine as hell/epically beautiful man.

Shinichi O. in NYC Tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got word via a MySpace bulletin from the brilliant and beautiful Jeff—a.k.a. ex-porn boy Damon DeMarco, writer of the legendarily gorgeous Naked City Boys blog, and now manager of NYC superclub Mr. Black—that the almighty sonic deity that is Shinichi Osawa is spinning at Mr. B. tonight. I'm having a bit of a catalespy in response as I listen to "Everything Needs Love" at deafening volume and trying to salve myself with the above aesthetically superb photo from an article on the Japanese online mag site Air. Needless to say, if you're in NYC and have any prayer in hell of making it, GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If not take solace in one of the Mondo Grosso clips elsewhere on this blog.

Lovely Return: 4Hero

I always miss the gods Marc and Dego when they take years between proper 4Hero discs, but it is ALWAYS worth the wait, and the gorgeous Play with the Changes proves that indefatigably once again. Of course I miss the d+b a bit, but this one is nowhere near as excessively broken as fools had made out. Not remotely as sublime as Two Pages but most definitely lovelier than Creating Patterns, the most shimmeringly beautiful here are the blissfully careening "Look Inside" (+ Face) and "Something in the Way" (+ the goddess Bembe Segue), along with the first single, "Morning Child," with Carina Andersson once again doing her best Minnie Riperton over Charles Stepney strings, in a mode that improves on the boys' exquisite but far too literal take on "Les Fleur." Gorgeous, essential, and much much much needed at the moment.

Even More Sonically Sublime: The True Reigning Mightiest Soul Queen, Alice Russell

The utterly exquisite live clip of "Hurry On Now" that I had here previously has been deleted, but this clip of "Seven Nation Army" (shot in Paris) is, if less miraculous, still the bearer of lovely things to come – via a new Alice R. live DVD due for release in June '07.

More Miss Winehouse: Loveliness with Paul Weller, Tears Dry..., and Drunken Hilarity with Loathsome Charlotte Church

While I wait anxiously to finally see the brilliant Miss Amy (and if all is right with the world, the Dap-Kings backing her up, as they did at the sold out Joe's Pub shows in NYC) on March 19 at the Roxy and again on March 20 at Spaceland, I stumbled upon the above-cited absolutely fucking hilarious video of the girl drunk on the (hideous) Charlotte Church show as the two mangle a song that was dismal to begin with. No fault of Amy on the mangling—if I had to be onstage with Charlotte Church I'd need to get lit first in kind. And to balance the scales, I had intended to include this lovely version of the shimmering Motown magnificence that is "Tears Dry on Their Own," but then I made the even more gorgeous discovery of the girl with Paul Weller on a slightly lopsided take on "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and a breath-defying take on "Don't Go to Strangers." Dig...
